Geevarghese Mar Divannasios, the first bishop of the Diocese of Puthoor of the Syro Malankara Catholic Church resigned on account of issues of health, and Msgr.Dr. George Kalayil was appointed by Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, as the administrator of the diocese. The appointment order was read out by Archbishop Thomas Mar Koorilos, the Synodal Secretary, at the center of the Diocese of Puthoor. The resignation came at a time when 7 years were completed after the erection of the Diocese of Puthoor on January 25, 2010. Mar Divannasios, who has been under medical care and in a period of rest, handed the request to have the official consent for resignation in to Baselios Cardinal Cleemis according to the norms of Canon Law of the Catholic Church, and it was accepted in consultation with the Holy Episcopal Synod, and later confirmed by His Holiness Pope Francis. Mar Divannasios was appointed the Bishop of the Diocese of Bathery on December 18, 1996, and after his meritorious Episcopal Ministry in the diocese for 14 years he was appointed as the bishop of Diocese of Puthoor on January 25, 2010. Mar Divannasios laid foundation for many parishes and educational institutions. Msgr. Dr. George Kalayil, who hails from Noojibalthila of Southern Karnataka, was conferred Holy Ordination in 1986 for the Diocese of Bathery, after completing his studies in seminaries in Mangalapuram and Pune. He was awarded a doctoral degree in Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He had been a professor in St. Mary’s Malankara Major Seminary for 17 years, and its Rector for four years.
